Hypnotherapy, The facts And Myths
OK, hypnotherapy does not involve using swinging watches, as above. This picture is a classic example of a myth I encountered while searching for a graphic for this blog. I found it funny. If you go to a therapist who starts using a watch to initiate hypnosis, leave and find a new therapist. Now I’ve got that off my chest; let’s begin.
If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’ve heard of hypnotherapy or perhaps even considered it as your treatment. However, like most alternative therapies, many myths and misconceptions surround hypnotherapy. Trust me; some whoppers surround hypnotherapy. In this blog, I will dispel some of the common myths around it and give you a better understanding of what it is and how it works.
So, What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapy that uses hypnosis to change behaviour, thought patterns, and emotions. Hypnosis is a state of mind that allows individuals to access their subconscious mind, where our beliefs, attitudes, and values are stored. By accessing this part of the mind, it can help individuals change negative thought patterns and behaviours that are holding them back from achieving their goals. Now, I need to point out that hypnosis, by itself, is of little therapeutic value. When hypnosis is combined with Strategic Psychotherapy, it becomes Clinical Hypnotherapy. The results can be life-changing. The psychotherapeutic element allows the therapist to dig into how a person runs the patterns they run, how they tick if you like. This knowledge can then be used to significant effect in hypnosis. This is a more extended conversation; however, that simple explanation will do for now. Now, let’s talk about some common myths around hypnotherapy and why they’re not true.

So, Let’s Dispel The Myths Of Hypnotherapy
Myth #1: It is mind control
This is perhaps one of the most common myths, and it’s untrue. Hypnotherapy is not mind control; a hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything against your will. Hypnosis is voluntary, and you can come out of it anytime. Hypnotherapy is about empowering individuals to control their thoughts and behaviours, not controlling them.
Myth #2: It is only for entertainment purposes
While hypnosis is often portrayed as entertainment on TV and in stage shows, it is a legitimate therapy used for many years to help individuals overcome various issues. It effectively treats anxiety, depression, addiction, and even chronic pain. It is a safe and non-invasive therapy that can help individuals make positive life changes.
Myth #3: It is only for weak-minded people
This is another common myth that is not true. Hypnotherapy is not about being weak-minded or easily influenced. Individuals who are most successful with it are open-minded and willing to change their lives. It is about helping individuals control their thoughts and behaviours, and it takes a lot of strength and courage to do that.
Myth #4: It is not backed by science
While hypnotherapy may seem like a mystical or alternative form of therapy, it is backed by science. Many studies have shown its effectiveness in treating various issues, from anxiety and depression to chronic pain and addiction. It works by tapping into the power of the subconscious mind, and a growing body of research supports its effectiveness. But you don’t need to take my word for it. Look at Google Scholar; you’ll find over 10,000 papers on hypnotherapy.
Myth #5: It is a quick fix
While hypnotherapy can effectively bring about positive changes relatively quickly, it is not a quick fix. It is a process that requires commitment and effort on the part of the individual. Like any therapy, it requires a willingness to make changes and work on oneself. However, with the right mindset and commitment, hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for personal growth and change.

In Conclusion
Hypnotherapy is a legitimate therapy that can help individuals make positive life changes. While many myths and misconceptions may surround it, it is essential to remember that hypnotherapy is a safe and non-invasive form of therapy that is backed by science. My sessions typically last between 45 minutes to an hour. The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual and their goals. In my case, I generally find I can achieve notable improvement for a client in 1 to 2 sessions, then significant change in 4 to 6.
