How I Treat Smoking With Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy and how does it help with quitting smoking?
Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy that uses hypnosis to help people change certain behaviours or habits, such as quitting smoking. It aims to access the subconscious mind and change negative beliefs and habits related to smoking. I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation, where positive suggestions are given to help you quit smoking and overcome any cravings or urges.

A meta-analysis conducted by Barnes et al. (2019) evaluated 27 randomized controlled trials involving over 2,000 participants to determine the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for smoking cessation compared to other forms of talk therapy. The study found that hypnotherapy was associated with higher quit rates compared to other forms of talk therapy, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, brief advice, and other forms of counselling. The study also found that the effectiveness of hypnotherapy was comparable to other smoking cessation treatments, such as nicotine replacement therapy.

How many sessions of hypnotherapy are needed to quit smoking?
The number of sessions required to quit smoking with hypnotherapy can vary depending on the individual and the severity of their addiction. Some people may quit after just one session, while others may require multiple sessions. On average, 3-5 sessions are usually recommended.
Is hypnotherapy for quitting smoking safe?
Hypnotherapy is considered safe when performed by a qualified and experienced hypnotherapist. However, as with any therapeutic intervention, it’s always a good idea to discuss any concerns with your therapist and make sure that you feel comfortable and relaxed during the session.

What is Strategic Psychotherapy?
Strategic psychotherapy describes a kind of therapy where the therapist is responsible for making considered decisions about how to help the client get to where they want to go. In effect, the therapist acts as a navigator however the client is still very much the captain of the ship. Strategic therapy seeks not to dwell endlessly on an unchangeable past but instead identify the limiting behaviours a client is running as a result of their life experiences and help them replace those patterns with more effective ones.
How long does a session take?
An initial session may take up to 90 minutes, and the following sessions take 60 minutes. This would include an initial strategic interview, a clinical hypnotherapy session, and then a post-session interview that will also include assigning tasking to the client.
Is online therapy as effective as in-clinic sessions?
Experience has shown that online therapy (via Zoom) works extremely well, comparable with in-person sessions.

All you need is an internet connection, headphones, a comfortable seated position, and privacy.

No traffic or parking issues, no rushing around, and evening sessions as late as 9 pm, or even on weekends, so you don’t need to deal with asking for time away from work.

Will my insurance cover treatment?
Some funds do and others do not. It also depends on your level of coverage. It’s best to check your schedule to see if your insurer provides any rebates.
Will I receive a recording of my session?
Yes, all sessions are recorded and a copy is provided, we suggest you listen to it daily between sessions. You will also receive lite tasking assignments to reinforce the improvements that you can do between sessions.
